Equipment rental represents an ideal solution for any organisation concerned that capital investments may not be cost-effective if the equipment is not in constant or regular use. Olympus Industrial have therefore appointed rental specialists Ashtead Technology, as its partner for the i-Speed, which is available at a day-rate or a weekly-rate that is only 4x the daily rate.

Many processes take place at high speed, and it is necessary to view slow-motion playbacks if a problem is to be analysed or if the process is to be improved. For this reason, the i-Speed is popular in the development of many manufacturing, packaging and printing processes. However, it is also being used in other applications such as vehicle impact safety testing, airbag development, ballistics, biomechanics, and pharmaceutical research.

Traditionally, the choice of equipment has been limited to bulky, expensive high-speed film cameras that were operated by consultants and professional filmmakers. However, the digital i-Speed weighs less than 5Kg and can be used by almost anyone with a minimum of training.

Whilst the camera has the benefit of being able to operate independently of the PC, it is important that images can be archived easily. i-Speed can download AVI movie files to Compact Flash cards for transfer to a PC using PCMCIA or USB adapters. The camera can also be linked using an Ethernet LAN directly to a PC, providing either pre-edited or automatic download of selected frames quickly and easily. A powerful suite of additional software tools provides the added advantage of data acquisition synchronised to each video frame.
